Book review: Other People’s Wars by Nicky Hager (Craig Potton Publishing) What are New Zealand soldiers doing in the Middle East? The accepted wisdom is that “we” are there for humanitarian purposes, assisting the rebuilding of a broken society, as part of a wider battle against terrorism and for democracy. Not so.

The view north from Warrington Beach this morning: I picked up a copy of Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban at the 24 Hour Regent Book Sale on Friday and finished it today. A grand read. The last book of his I read was the Mouse and His Child, when I was about eight.
After recovering from a dose of the midwinter flu and blues I’m looking forward to going on holiday. Heading across the ditch and doing a slightly unusual trip on the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth.
